Shipbuilding and marine industry: Safe and robust process heating and energy systems for maritime applications

Uncompromising design and build quality for continuous operation and safe media handling in confined spaces

The shipping and marine industries are subject to specific constraints. Systems must be designed and manufactured to be compact and reliable, ensuring they operate effectively even under varying cargo and load profiles. At the same time, the focus is on availability, redundancy, ease of maintenance, robust construction and materials with long-term durability. In maritime systems, heat is required primarily for heating cargo tanks and pipelines carrying cargo such as bitumen, oil derivatives, chemicals and sulphur, as well as highly demanding fuels such as heavy and extra-heavy fuel oils, but also for central heating systems, tank washing systems and steam generators.

CAW supplies complete heat generation and distribution systems designed to withstand the exceptional and demanding operating conditions on board virtually all types and classes of vessel. Thermal oil systems are particularly well-suited to this purpose, as they meet the simultaneous requirements for high flow temperatures without steam pressure and consistently stable temperature control. Thermal oil heaters – whether as direct-fired units or as waste heat recovery systems/economisers in the exhaust systems of ship engines – are adapted to the fuel, power requirements and installation environment. Shell-and-tube heat exchangers are relevant for maritime systems because they provide clear media separation and are robust against pressure and temperature fluctuations.

When considering complex and often extensive integrated systems, CAW takes into account all utility networks, comprehensive regulatory and safety requirements, complex automation and monitoring concepts, as well as optimal access for maintenance and inspection.

    • Thermal oil systems for a stable supply of process heat in maritime applications
    • Shell-and-tube heat exchangers for robust fluid separation and heating networks
    • Economiser for utilising flue gas heat and improving efficiency
    • Engineering for compact integration, safety and operational concepts

CAW provides solutions that prioritise safety and reliability in accordance with all applicable maritime standards. The aim is to deliver plant engineering that operates safely and reliably under the changing conditions on board inland waterway and seagoing vessels, whilst making efficient use of energy.
