Shipbuilding and marine industry: Safe and robust process heating and energy systems for maritime applications

Uncompromising design and build quality for continuous operation and safe media handling in the tightest of spaces

The shipbuilding and marine industries are subject to specific constraints. Systems must be designed and manufactured to be compact and reliable, ensuring they function dependably even under varying cargo and load profiles. At the same time, the focus is on availability, redundancy, ease of maintenance, robust construction, and materials with long-term durability. In maritime systems, heat is primarily required for heating cargo tanks and pipelines carrying cargoes such as bitumen, petroleum derivatives, chemicals, and sulfur, as well as highly demanding fuels such as heavy and extra-heavy fuel oils; as well as for central heating systems, tank washing systems, and steam generators.

CAW supplies complete heat generation and distribution systems designed for the exceptional and demanding operating conditions aboard virtually all types and classes of ships. Thermal oil systems are particularly well-suited for this purpose, as high feed line temperatures without steam pressure and consistently stable temperatures are simultaneously required. Thermal oil heaters – whether as direct-fired units or as waste heat recovery systems / economizers in the exhaust systems of marine engines – are tailored to the fuel, power requirements, and installation environment. Shell-and-tube heat exchangers are relevant for maritime systems because they provide clear separation of media and are robust against fluctuations in pressure and temperature.

When considering complex and often branched integrated systems, CAW considers all utility networks, comprehensive permitting and safety requirements, complex automation and monitoring concepts, as well as optimal access for maintenance and inspection.

    • Thermal oil systems for a stable supply of process heat in maritime applications
    • Shell-and-tube heat exchangers for robust fluid separation and heating networks
    • Economizers for utilizing exhaust heat and improving efficiency
    • Engineering for compact integration, safety and operational concepts

CAW provides solutions that prioritize safety and availability in accordance with all applicable maritime standards. The goal is to deliver plant technology that operates safely and reliably under the changing conditions on board inland waterway and ocean-going vessels, while using energy efficiently.
